Our Exhortation to our Magistrates to End Abortion in Indiana

Dear Governor Holcomb,

In the eighty-second Psalm, Yahweh, the True and Living God takes His stand among His own appointed rulers and judges. He takes His stand to call them to account for the way in which they hold their office of Government. In the second verse of the Psalm, Yahweh offers a rebuke to the unjust rulers by way of a scathing rhetorical question:

“How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked?”

And verses three and four, a command is given:

Vindicate the weak and the fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and destitute.

Rescue the weak and needy; Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

Governor Holcomb, though you may not be one who holds the particular office of authority that is being rebuked and exhorted in this Psalm, you must understand that all who have authority, every civil magistrate throughout all time, including you, are given their office, and thus responsibility, not primarily by voters but by the Only True and Living God. That God is King Jesus Christ, Himself. Therefore, this passage is explicitly instructive for you. Take heed, sir.

Romans 13 says that God establishes authorities, and He has given you and other local magistrates in Indiana to be His ministers of the sword of justice; to be a terror to evil and protect the innocent.

The Word of God is clear, all earthly authorities will answer to Him. Just as the eighty-second Psalm closes, in verse eight, with a cry of the righteous innocent to King Jesus, Himself:

“Arise, O God, judge the earth! For it is You who possesses all the nations.”

You, Governor Holcomb, will stand in the presence of the Living God, and give an answer for how you used the authority He entrusted to you. A good authority will reign righteously and rule justly. This includes protecting preborn children in our state.

For years in Indiana, our hands have been full of the blood of children that have been sacrificed to the “gods” of prosperity, convenience, fear, and a so-called “right to choose”. Even though Indiana has a solid majority of “pro-life” Republicans in power, the State has given license to kill little ones in the womb.

For 49 years, the Supreme Court has been the Republican leaders’ excuse for allowing this bloodshed. But the Republican party can no longer hide behind the façade of this Supreme Court decision. As Christians, we praise God that Roe V. Wade is overturned, and yet we understand that there is much work to do.

Furthermore, since the decision overturning Roe V. Wade, this proud, conservative, pro-life state has become a refuge for abortion, with a marked increase of women traveling from states with trigger laws now in effect, like Ohio and Kentucky, in order to seek solace that they might murder their unborn baby in peace.

Governor Holcomb, it is time that the Indiana state government rule righteously. It is time that governors and legislators judge according to God’s standard. God’s Word is clear that the shedding of innocent blood must not be tolerated, but must be avenged with the civil sword of justice.

As pastors ordained by God, we call upon you to put your full support behind ending abortion in Indiana. We exhort you – in the day when all the foundations of the earth are shaken, when the world watches, Hoosiers watch, when The Living God Himself watches - take up your role as Governor boldly by actively working to end the murder of preborn children in Indiana without delay and without compromise. You must be vocal, assertive, and stand in the gap for your preborn neighbors.

As pastors, we are dedicated to pray for your boldness. We are dedicated to pray for the Lord’s justice established in the land. We are dedicated to pray for the abolition of this vile sin of abortion in our state.

May God have mercy on Indiana, and may Jesus Christ reign supreme!

Soli deo gloria,
